International Ballroom Show Dance – Rumba

Students
This class is designed for students already learned Rumba basic, for example, those who studied
one semester of international rumba during the beginner level at NCLS. Both ladies and
gentlemen are welcome, gentlemen specially encouraged! Both couples and singles are
welcome, no partners required. Those with other dancing background can join the class at
teachers’ discretion. We love to have past graduates from NCLS ballroom program to join us!
The NCLS ballroom program successfully presented numerous group performances throughout
the past 20 plus years. The Show Dance class will focus on individual couple/person
performance. Through various practices and drills, the students will raise self-awareness of
one’s own strengths and weakness, begin to develop their own individual style.
The Show Dance class has two focus. One is to demonstrate the characteristics of the dance, in
this case, rumba. The other is to teach the many fundamentals of a successful dance
performance: musicality, story-telling, to express oneself through body and dance movements.
With the ultimate goal to evoke audiences’ emotional response.
Each lesson will divide to 2 parts. The first part will be about fundamentals and techniques,
rumba walk, spiral/turns and spins, core usages, hand usages, whole body coordination,
stretching all directions including the end of finger tips and toe nails, connections between
partner. The second part will focus on various aspects of performing arts, 1) body, action,
space and energy awareness, 2) rhythm and musicality, 3) various contrasts, i.e. slow vs fast,
explosiveness vs control, tense energetic aggressive vs. soft and fluid, sharp and clear vs flow 4)
facial expressions and other dramatic elements.
Several lessons prior to the end of the semester will dedicate to each couple/single’s
performance and students and teachers give feedbacks. The teachers provides a class routine
for reference, students are encouraged to choose their own routines and music for the final
performance.
